Gideon was a bit of a coward. When God showed Himself to Gideon and commanded him to rescue Israel from the Midianites (Judges 6:14), Gideon's immediate response was of doubt of his own strength and ability (Judges 6:15). Even when God showed him a sign in the form of a fire flaming up from a rock (Judges 6:21), Gideon still doubted and asked for more signs by testing God with a wool fleece (Judges 6:36-39).
Nonetheless, Gideon obeyed God in spite of his doubts... he proceeded even though he feared. With God's instructions, he led an army of a mere 300 against the Midianites who numbered tens of thousands. Judges 7:7-21 describe how God threw the enemy into confusion to fight against each other such that Gideon's 300 did not even have to lift up their swords to win.
I like Gideon. He was a man full of fear and doubt, but despite those uncertainties, still obeyed God as best as he could. This gives us some hope. It is very hard not to fear, not to doubt, but like Gideon, we can still obey God and do His work in spite of our uncertainties.
