300 revisited

Samson was another of Israel's judges, after Gideon. Samson was known for his great physical strength BUT he had a temper problem, was often rash and quite ruled by emotion rather than reason. The following example illustrates Samson's character.

In Judges 14 and 15, Samson was to be married to a Philistine woman. However, due to a bet gone wrong which resulted in Samson killing thirty men for their clothings, the Philistine woman was given to Samson's best man. As revenge, Samson caught 300 foxes, tied their tails together in pairs, fastened a torch to each pair of tails, lit the torches and let the foxes run through the grain fields of the Philistines, burning and destroying the fields.

Definitely, in spite of Samson's bad attitude, God still used him to defeat the Philistines (15:15, 16:30). But imagine how much more he could have achieved for God had he not chosen to waste his strength on making immature bets, stealing others' clothings and tying fox tails.
