In Deuteronomy 4:35, Moses said to the Israelites: He showed you these things so you would know that the LORD is God and there is no other.
When Moses spoke this to the Israelites, they had just defeated King Sihon and King Og and their entire armies east of the Jordan River, and were preparing to enter the Promised Land. Moses was recapping all the act of wonders God had performed to lead the Isrealites out of slavery to be where they were, i.e. at the verge of claiming Canaan for their own.
Unlike today, where we have the benefit of the Bible and hindsight, the Israelites at that time had nothing. They didn't have scriptures or traditions they could refer to to know God. All they had was some vague understanding that they were descendants of Abraham. Further, they had come from Egypt with its numerous gods, and were also surrounded by other pagan nations who worshipped all forms of idols. It wasn't easy at that time to know what's real and what's false.
In order to show the Israelites that "the LORD is God both in heaven and on earth and there is no other", God performed many miracles that proved His sovereignty and power. He also so personally instructed them on His laws and ways, to prove His love for them. God is good, isn't He? He didn't simply expect the Israelites to just believe... but He slowly and gently showed Himself to them to enable them to believe.
Isn't it the same with us.. with me? It's hard, if not impossible to just believe... but God has been good... He has provided so perfectly and so faithfully that I cannot not believe.
